Far away from the extremely elaborate complications of venetian hugh jewelry, minor noblity and the plebs used relatively simple jewelry in their day to day. Instead of big stones, small gems and pearls lent the spotlight to delicate metalwork as is the case here.
Pearls were often put in cages, af were corals, in the belief that these might protect the wearer from various curses. In this case, the cage filigree hangs freely for ease of movement.
